Why your cat cries at night
Cats are not nocturnal — they are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk. The 4am performance is that instinct meeting a flat where nothing happened all day.
Work out which one it is
| Pattern | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Same time every night, stops when fed | Hunger, or a learned feeding schedule |
| Racing around, pupils wide, play-attacking | Unspent energy |
| Crying at a closed door | Wants access, usually to you |
| Loud, wandering, disoriented, older cat | Worth a vet visit — hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure and feline cognitive dysfunction all cause night vocalising |
| Started suddenly in a previously quiet cat | Vet first. Pain and illness change vocal habits |
The evening routine
The fix is to give the cat its hunt-catch-eat-sleep cycle at a time that suits you, so the sleep part lands at night.
- A proper play session, 15–20 minutes, an hour before your bedtime. Wand toy, real stalking and chasing, ending in several catches. Play it to the point where the cat is genuinely slowing down — not until you are bored.
- Feed the largest meal of the day immediately afterwards. This is the whole mechanism: eating after a successful hunt is what triggers sleep in a cat.
- Then leave it alone. No more play, no more attention. Quiet wind-down.
- Put a puzzle feeder or a small timed portion out for the small hours so the cat has something to do at 4am that is not you.
Expect it to take one to two weeks, and expect a few nights where it gets briefly worse before it improves.
The part most people get wrong
Getting up to feed a crying cat teaches it that crying produces food, and it is very effective teaching. Once the cat has learned it, the only way out is to stop responding entirely — and the noise gets louder for several nights before it fades. If you give in on night four, you have taught the cat to escalate.
Ways to make that survivable:
- An automatic feeder set for pre-dawn. The machine feeds the cat, not you, so the crying and the food are no longer connected.
- Earplugs for a week. Honestly, this is what makes the difference for most people.
- Shut the bedroom door consistently, or leave it open consistently. Alternating teaches the cat that crying sometimes opens it, which is the worst possible schedule.
Do not punish night crying
Spraying water or shouting still counts as a response, and to a cat that wants attention any response will do. It also raises stress, which tends to make the crying worse.
